The Future of Programming Languages

Thursday, January 7th 3:29pm Matt

Lately I’ve been a bit concerned. One of the things I love about the internet is that it allows anyone to invent something like a programming language or a blogging system. That’s really good.

But what’s bad is that it seems like there are a lot of lessons we should have learned from the past that are getting ignored. Javascript, PHP, PERL, and all the other “internet” languages all feel very unprofessional. They all need the flexibility and logic that C has, for instance.

However maybe it’s only because people are ignoring lessons of the past that we are able to have these new languages and learn the lessons of the present. What I hope is that the next phase is that these two things come together so we have the best of the old and new all in one or more languages.
